Welcome to Crowley County

Crowley County is a peaceful and welcoming place in southeastern Colorado. It is a great location for outdoor activities such as fishing, camping, boating, jet skiing, bird watching, and bicycling. Crowley County is Colorado as it was intended to be.

The county is located on the high plains of southeastern Colorado. The county seat, Ordway, is about 50 miles east of Pueblo, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 96 and Colorado Highway 71.

Crowley County is a small, rural community with a diverse population. Residents include farmers, ranchers, educators, government employees, and people who work in the correctional system. With a mild climate, relaxed way of life, and affordable cost of living, Crowley County is a great place to call home.

Traffic Impacts

Week of May 12–May 16

Crews will be removing the concrete barrier and performing milling operations. The following traffic changes will be in place:

  • Northbound CO 71 will have alternating one-lane closures from Mile Point (MP) 20 to MP 20.75.

  • Northbound CO 71 will also have mobile one-lane closures from MP 18.75 to MP 20.

Motorists should expect delays of up to 15 minutes.
The speed limit may be reduced to 40 miles per hour through the work zone.

About the Project

Location: Colorado Highway 71, between Mile Point (MP) 18.75 and MP 20.75, located north of County Road HH.5 and south of Bob Creek, in Crowley and Otero Counties.

Project Overview:

Construction will include the following improvements:

  • Addition of a northbound passing lane

  • Centerline cross slope correction and full-width overlay

  • Installation of new fencing, roadway signs, and delineators

  • Application of new pavement markings for increased visibility

This work will take place in both the northbound and southbound lanes over a two-mile stretch of CO 71 between Rocky Ford and Ordway.

Purpose of the Project:

These enhancements are designed to improve safety and traffic flow by:

  • Providing a designated safe passing zone

  • Ensuring proper drainage and slope from the roadway centerline

  • Enhancing lane visibility through updated pavement markings

Project Schedule

Construction will occur during daytime hours, beginning approximately 30 minutes after sunrise (around 7:00 a.m.) and ending approximately 30 minutes before sunset (around 7:00 p.m.), Monday through Friday. Some Saturday work may also take place if needed.

The project is anticipated to continue through the end of July.
